5 Signs It’s Time To Sell Your Horse

As much as you might not want to admit it, it may be time to sell your horse. A horse is your partner so it can be hard to realize you may have to sell them. If you are wondering whether you should sell your horse, consider these five signs it may be time.

1. You’ve Outgrown Your Horse

You might have outgrown your horse physically or your horse can’t keep up with you and your level of riding anymore. In this case, you may need a younger horse that can accommodate your level of activity or competition.

2. Your Needs Changed

When you first bought your horse, you might have thought you just wanted the horse to ride around leisurely. But now you’ve decided you want to compete or change disciplines, and your horse just isn’t up to that task. If your horse can’t change riding styles alongside you, it’s probably time to sell your horse for one that can.

3. Fear

You might have bought a horse that has a temperament different from what you initially expected. If you are afraid of your horse’s behaviors or they do something that scares you, that can take away from your riding experience. Horses can often pick up on fear so it may be a good idea for you to get a horse that builds your confidence instead of one that frightens you.

4. You’ve Bought Too Much Horse

There is such a thing as buying too much horse. If working with a skilled trainer hasn’t helped make your horse more manageable, it may be time to get a new horse. You will be much happier with a horse that you can handle and your horse will be happier in a home that can handle his needs and match his level.

5.You’re Just Not the Right Match

When it comes down to it, you and your horse just might not make the perfect pair. It’s important that the horse matches the rider and if the partnership isn’t working out, then it’s okay to move on. Both you and the horse will be much better off with partners that are better suited to them and their riding styles.

If the signs are there, then it may be time to move on. As hard as it may be, selling your horse can be a great decision for both you and your horse.
